Context

A Deep Tunnel Stormwater System is built in Dubaï as part of an expanded infrastructure network. The designer commissioned Artelia for a hydraulic scale modelling study of the Terminal Pumping Station in order to validate its hydraulic design and to ensure its proper operation.

The Terminal Pumping Station aims at conveying the stormwater runoff into the sea.

Aims of the physical scale model

The objective of this model is to ensure the proper functioning of the Terminal Pumping Station by checking the following criteria :

  • submerged and free surface vortices,
  • pre-swirl at the pump suction,
  • non-uniform distribution of the velocity at impeller eye,
  • entrainment of air or gas bubbles,
  • flow 3D pattern at the outlet of the tunnel,
  • distribution of the flow across the wet wells.

Description of the physical scale model

The physical model represents all the relevant geometry of the Terminal Pumping Station : the main inlet tunnel, the three screen chambers, the two wet wells for the four pumps, the anti-vortex devices.

The model is also equipped with measurement devices : electromagnetic flow meter, swirl meter and local flow velocity measure through Pitot tubes.
